On October 22, 2006, the Panamanian people, through a free and democratic National Referendum, approved the "Expansion of the Panama Canal, through the Construction of a Third Set of Locks".
 
With this decision, the Panama Canal Authority is duly authorized to start such an important project of global impact, which will represent an estimated investment of up to 5.2 Billions U.S. Dollars, within the next 7 years.
